Sending Audio Private Messages

Sorry if this is a stupid question but ...

Just wondering how possible it is to be able to leave someone an audio private message as well as a text one. Just like a voicemail on ZBP, but with a mic?

Thanks in advance

That wouldn't really be workable as far as I can see. Firstly they'd need untold amounts of space to hold the messages in the first place, then there's saved messages, audio after all, takes up far more space than text. Also As you pointed out yourself we already have the ability to leave voice mails on zbp, so do we really need the same thing on the site as well? But wait a minute though, there used to be a program, and for all I know still is, called handy bits. This thing let you record a message, and enclose it in an email somehow. Now that, as it's an email, wouldnt' take up server space, other than temporarily while you recorded the message potentially anyway, and then once it was sent, it was sent, and on your isp's server. I.E the ISP's server it was sent to, make sense? So why not do that. Give us the ability to send an audio message as well as a text one?
Just a thought...

Hmm. I'd be more worried about the bandwidth than storage. And if you want to do this with a mic, why not just use a sip client, go onto zbp, and leave a message that way?

Not everyone has Zone by Phone access, Nehemiah. Some people don't do it because they just don't feel like messing with a SIP client or the phone.

I like the idea of incorperating a HandyBits voice client. I don't know if they have a way that can be encoded to the site. However, if that ever became an option, users should have the abillity to turn off receiveing audio private messages.

It never ceases to amaze me that no matter how much J and Chris try to give us and how many improvements they make to the site, people always want more. Maybe someone from the zone could come over to your house and wipe your ass for you too when you use the toilet?

so, what do you think the zone should be. bare bones? we have nothing at all? i like it that people are at least trying to find new ideas to keep the site growing

It is far from bare bones and has come a long way since I joined in June 2004. It keeps improving, but people keep wanting more. I have made my fair share of suggestions in the past, I'm just saying we can't expect them to give us everything. We have ZBP, and I don't see the point of audio private messages.

Becky, its just an aditional option. Personally I could care less if it gets implamented. I'm not on here enough for it to matter these days. However, the idea itself isn't a bad one.

LOL, LibraLady. This idea might not be a bad one if ZBP didn't exist. But since it does, I wouldn't really see a point to it.

I wouldn't think storage would be that big of an issue. Audio profiles and voice mails take up storage. In fact I would think it would be easier since you have it so the message is taken off the server after a certain amount of time, say right after the person gets it. You make the file size small enough so storage isn't bandwith and storage are not a problem. In the mean time, window's live is your friend. It can do voice clips no matter your connection.

Folks, the file size also needs to be small for those folks who are still stuck in the dark age of dialdown (dialup).
